DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to develop the reasoning and critical thinking skills necessary to function effectively as a degree student at the University of Malta. Fundamental research skills are included to help students develop the important evaluative, analytical and decision making skills necessary for study at tertiary level. Study-unit Aims: The principal aim of the study-unit is to prepare students so to deal effectively with the research and analytic skills required by degree students at the University of Malta. The study-unit will also offer an introduction to critical reasoning by developing argumentation skills and conscious reflection on one’s ideas. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Distinguish between qualitative and quantitative research and outline the advantages and disadvantages of each. - Compare and contrast different approaches to answering research questions. - Distinguish between deductive and inductive logic. - Distinguish between valid and invalid arguments. - Distinguish between untrue statements and faulty logic. - Describe various types of fallacious arguments. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Evaluate and analyze information to answer specific questions and form new ideas. - Apply basic reasoning skills to the analysis of arguments and evaluation of evidence. - Develop a research strategy to examine a specific research question. - Carry out a small research study including literature review and report on the findings. - Participate effectively in a debate.
