DEPARTMENT Gender and Sexualities

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will begin by studying what equality and equity mean. We will also see that policies, practices and legislation which might appear neutral, will have a differential impact where gender, sexual orientation and race/ethnic groups are concerned. We will also look at legislation related to equality, and why these might not be effective if we do not constantly conduct mainstreaming and auditing exercises to ensure that legislation, policies and practices are having the desired impact. The theoretical part will be then followed by hands-on workshops.

In these workshops students will lean how to conduct mainstreaming and auditing exercises to ensure that the rights of minority groups are being taken into consideration on a gender, race/ethnicity and LGBTIQ basis. Gender mainstreaming is a strategy to achieve gender equality, using an intersectional approach. It helps public and other administrators study the impact of all policies, practices and programmes on women and men, whatever their gender identity, race, ethnicity and/or their sexual orientation. This study-unit aims to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge on using the tenets of gender mainstreaming and analysis using an intersectional approach. The unit also provides students with the opportunity to focus on specific sectors or policy areas so that participants can employ this knowledge in their own workplace.

Study-Unit Aims:
