DESCRIPTION The first part of the study-unit will provide an overview of the history and main theories on gender and sexuality.

Furthermore, practices, regulation, perceptions and medical approaches to sexuality will be presented and discussed with the use of different cases studies. This will enable a deep understanding of contemporary debates on gender and sexuality and their impact on society, as well as the complex and articulated relationship between sexuality and gender.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce feminist and queer theories on gender, sex and sexuality, and the core concepts and terminology.
- To provide an overview on the changes of meanings, practices, perceptions and regulation of sexuality that have occurred throughout history.
- To raise critical ability among the students on contemporary issues related to gender and sexuality.
- To highlight the role of culture and societies in shaping and constructing notions of gender, sex and sexuality.
- To explore the relationship of gender, sex and sexuality to power and governmentality.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Recognise how feminist and queer theories are related to gender and sexuality.
- Identify how discourse about gender and sexuality vary over time and cross-culturally.
- Critically analyse contemporary debates and discourses around gender and sexuality and their impact on society.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Think critically on the issues of gender and sexuality.
- Engage in analytic discussions.
- Assess how social status impacts socio-sexual scripts of persons with intersectional identities
