ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT German

DESCRIPTION This study-unit deals with important areas of German sociolinguistics and the history of the language, including intercultural issues. Topics of German socio-linguistics concerning diachronic and synchronic aspects are, for instance, varieties of speech (such as dialects), routing varieties (prevalent forms of speech), language changes and the connections between linguistic and socio-cultural processes. As long as a language is still written and spoken it is changing constantly.

Language contact between different language groups, societies and nations is a decisive factor for language change and constitutes a primary area of interest in sociolinguistics. The concepts of “language contact” and “language change” give linguists the opportunity to connect and link the analysis of linguistic aspects to cultural, social and political phenomena. The development of language can thus be related to social values, norms and contents of awareness.

Each participant will give a brief presentation on a chosen aspect of the course topic.
