DESCRIPTION | This study-unit on Gender Based Violence and Domestic Violence is tailor-made for the Police Force. Topics covered will include definitions and an understanding of Gender Based Violence, Domestic Violence, Intimate Partner Violence and Violence against Women (including Femicide). It will cover the causes of these, and possible means of prevention, including harmful attitudes, behaviours and stereotypes. It will then consider the victims/survivors of these forms of violence and abuse, including children as witnesses, the effects of witnessing domestic violence and how to deal with the child witnesses. So called 'parental alienation' will also be tackled. Skills for Interviewing victims, such as listening, empathy, sensitivity will be taught. Another topic will be a focus on perpetrators, including adolescent perpetrators against parent. Relevant Legislation, national and international, will be covered as well as existing services available and how to refer. Study-Unit Aims: - to demonstrate different forms of GBV/VAW together with their specific gendered dynamics; - to illustrate their impact; - to disseminate knowledge on relevant legislation and its application; - to provide a space where students can reflect on assumptions and beliefs in relation to the topic; - to facilitate appropriate referrals; - to facilitate effective communication with victims, witnesses and perpetrators of GBV, and better facilitate justice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - understand the needs of victims/survivors of gender based violence and domestic violence and refer to other services as appropriate; - explain the application of the relevant legislation to their work; - through class case studies demonstrate their understanding of the dynamics of GBV&DV. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - listen empathically; - analyse cases; - differentiate between cases of VAW/DV and other forms of violence to enable triage and proper risk assessments.
