DESCRIPTION This study-unit will enable students to acquire the skills needed on a topic of their choice with the help of designated supervisors. Students will be required to carry out reading, designing and conducting research when relevant. This study unit will give them the skills they need to help them write the long essay. The chosen theme will be approved by the supervisor and the coordinator of the study-unit.

The supervisor will help the student to articulate the theme; suggest which methods and theories would enable them to study a specific theme; and they will be provided with a bibliography of essential reading about the theme and/or conducting research. They will be given support to help them design and implement a research plan whilst addressing any ethical issues. Together with their designated supervisor, they will determine target dates for each stage of the work to be completed.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit is aimed at guiding the student in designing, structuring and writing a particular research study. It will also introduce students to the research process and its implementation under the guidance of a supervisor.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out independent but guided exploration of a chosen topic;
- Identify, read and critique literature on the chosen topic;
- Evaluate and analyse the literature on the chosen topic;
- Understand the steps needed to carry out a small scale research project on the chosen topic
- Carry out research, analyse data and write a report.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Research and read around a chosen topic on an independent basis;
- Devise and implement a small scale research project on the chosen topic;
- Work towards specific deadlines as agreed with supervisor;
- Write a long essay on the chosen topic and the research carried out.
