DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers a basic introduction to biblical and modern Hebrew. Students will first learn the alphabet, the main phonological principles, and pronunciation. Subsequently, sentences drawn from different Hebrew texts will be used to explain basic notions of Hebrew grammar and explore how knowledge of the original language enriches the understanding and interpretation of these texts. Students will also practice basic conversational situations in modern Hebrew.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To teach students the Hebrew alphabet, the main phonological principles of the language, and pronunciation of words;
2. To explain basic notions of Hebrew grammar through the reading of adapted texts;
3. To explore the manner in which grammatical principles can be used as an aid in the interpretation of Hebrew texts;
4. To engage in basic conversational situations in modern Hebrew.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. memorize and recognize all letters of the Hebrew alphabet and reproduce their respective sounds;
2. recall and explain basic notions of Hebrew grammar;
3. translate basic sentences from Hebrew to English;
4. demonstrate an understanding of the application of grammatical principles in the study and interpretation of Hebrew texts;
5. perform a basic conversation in modern Hebrew.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. analyze different types of texts in a critical manner;
2. integrate and apply different types of knowledge to produce new interpretations;
3. use language to explore a new culture and worldview.
