DESCRIPTION By the end of the course, students are expected to have written and submitted for examination a dissertation of 50,000 words, exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. The chosen topic must be in the field of Hebraic and Jewish Studies, without excluding the possibility of drawing in the relevant material from Ancient Near Eastern Studies.

Study-unit Aims:

The dissertation is intended to train students in the following:
1. To use critically the original Hebrew and Jewish sources;
2. To evaluate critically the secondary sources in light of the primary evidence;
3. To conduct research of a historical, philological, and/or literary nature, to mention just a few of various possible approaches, within the field of Hebrew and Jewish Studies;
4. To write a sustained piece of work, according to the established criteria of academic writing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. use and evaluate critically the original Hebrew and Jewish sources;
2. gain a solid critical overview of the primary and secondary sources pertinent to their chosen topic.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. make a close reading of texts, whether they are ancient or modern;
2. be more creative and critical in thinking out various problems;
3. write more clearly and precisely in jargon free language;
4. feel more at ease in writing an academic piece of work and in coming up with their own original perspectives.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

The supervisor will guide the students to draw up a solid bibliography relevant to their chosen topic.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
