DESCRIPTION A theme developed by the student through personal reading and research under the regular guidance of a member of the Department. The choice of the theme requires the approval of the Head of Department, and it could be closely related to the topic of the student's dissertation.

Study-unit Aims:

The directed study-unit is intended to train students in the following:
- To use critically the original Hebrew and Jewish sources;
- To evaluate critically the secondary sources in light of the primary evidence;
- To conduct research of a historical, philological, and/or literary nature, to mention just a few of the various possible approaches, within the field of Hebrew and Jewish Studies;
- To write a sustained piece of work, according to the established criteria of academic writing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use and evaluate critically the original Hebrew and Jewish sources;
- Gain a solid critical overview of the primary and secondary sources pertinent to their chosen topic.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
- Be able to make a close reading of texts, whether they are ancient or modern;
- Be more creative and critical in thinking out various problems;
- Be able to write more clearly and precisely in jargon free language;
- Feel more at ease in writing an academic piece of work and in coming up with their own original perspectives.

There is no fixed reading list. The texts/readings depend on the theme/topic chosen by the student.
