DESCRIPTION | The Local Church boasts of a tradition extending to Apostolic times. Studying this tradition allows one to deeper understand the formation of the national identity, which in every aspect; culturally, socially, artistically is intimately linked with the Catholic faith. The study-unit will allow a deeper understanding of these aspects through a study of the primary sources; monumentary, artistic and documentary. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide: - An understanding of the history of the Church in Malta. - An interpretation of these formative events in the light of the wider history of the universal Church. - An appreciation of the artistic and documentary wealth of the Local Church. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - relate to and interpret formative events, leading personalities, religious and devotional trends in the history of the Local Church, with a particular emphasis on its artistic, documentary and folkoristic heritage; - read this history in the wider context of the universal Church; - assess his/her interpretation of the Church in general, as well of local Christian tradition. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - evaluate the artistic and documentary heritage of the local Church in a faith context; - better infer and evaluate historical documentation related to the local Church; - appraise the role of the Church in Maltese society today in light of its past.
