UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Church History, Patrology and Palaeochristian Archaeology

DESCRIPTION Artistic production in Malta benefited greatly through the arrival of the Knights of Saint John, which coincides with the period of Catholic reform through the application of the Council of Trent. Studying this tradition allows one to deeper understand the formation of the national identity, which in ever aspect; culturally, socially, artistically is intimately linked with the Catholic faith.

The rich artistic tradition of the Church in Malta, must be interpreted in the wider context of the faith which made necessary the production and use of sacred art and space in its worship. It is a tradition which becomes particularly manifest in the Baroque period, indelibly marking the Maltese ecclesiastical context. It is necessary to interpret this artistic production within a living tradition that continues to develop in the modern and contemporary period, in line with artistic movements on the continent.
