DESCRIPTION | This is the first part of an introductory language course. Students will be given a detailed explanation of the basic grammatical, morphological and syntax rules. Particular attention will be given to the correct pronunciation of this type of Latin since it is different from that of Classical Latin. The differences between these two types of Latin, consisting mainly in the slightly simpler form of the Ecclesiastical variant will be outlined and discussed. Considerable importance will be given to translations of simple Classical texts that will be carried out during tutorials as well as at home. Study-Unit Aims: - Students will be helped to acquire a basic appreciation of the Latin language as used in the golden age by Roman authors. - Students will be guided to demonstrate the particular use of grammatical forms such as the many uses of the ablative case, which was later much used in the ecclesiastical milieu Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Underline the various parts of phrases and clauses for better comprehension. - Define the verbal forms that were later most frequently used in ecclesiastical archival documents, namely the present indicative, and past perfect. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Translate simple phrases and sentences used by some early Latin Christian writers - Select and classify key words in Latin Christian texts Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Main Texts: - Collins John F., (1985).
