DESCRIPTION This is the second part of an Introductory Language Course.

After having analyzed and discussed the basics of the language in the first part of the course, in the second part the differences between Classical Latin and Ecclesiastical Latin will be defined and contrasted.

Considerable importance will be given to translations from Ecclesiastical texts and archive material that will be carried out during tutorials as well as at home.

Study-Unit Aims:

Students will be helped to acquire an appreciation of the Latin language and its use in ecclesiastical liturgy, documentation and chancery.

The relevance of the language in the ecclesiastical milieu will be underlined

Students will be guided to demonstrate the standard forms of particular ecclesiastical formularies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- relate with the language used in Ecclesiastical circles from the Middle Ages onwards;
- identify the various forms used in specific formularies;
- label different forms of ecclesiastical documentation (registers, meeting minutes, indexes, supplicae etc).

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- translate simple standard ecclesiatical formulae generally found in parish baptismal, marriage and funeral records;
- select key words in Ecclesiastical archival documents in order to classify them accordingly;
- read and draw information from parochial/diocesan registers and archives.
