DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide learners with the theory and practice of vocational pedagogy to be able to teach basic hair and scalp structure, health and safety legislation, basic first aid skills, professional conduct in the salon. In addition, exposure to and practice of the pedagogical methods, learners will consolidate knowledge of key aspects of health and safety, and anatomy and physiology of hair and scalp. Aspects of assessment related to these areas will be explored throughout the study-unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this study-unit is to enable prospective Hairdressing and Beauty teachers to learn the various teaching and learning methods required by this curricular area. It will help develop the skills and competencies that reliably lead to achievement of the learning outcomes for Hairdressing and Beauty as a VET subject in Secondary school students. In addition, the study-unit will guide students to enhance their knowledge in one aspect of the VET curriculum, namely professional salon conduct as based on hair and scalp anatomy and health and safety skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain the concept and principles of health and safety, basic first aid, professional conduct in the hair and beauty sector;
- Evaluate different teaching and learning methods that cater for students with different learning abilities;
- Describe various pedagogical tools suitable to engage students learning hairdressing and beauty, particularly basic anatomy of the hair and skin, and health and safety.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use a blend of teaching and learning methods, whereby the teacher is a ‘coach’ moving away from the formal teaching and learning methods to experiential learning and scaffolded knowledge;
- Guide and supervise young students in the use of hair and beauty equipment and practice safely;
- Assess students in relation to the basic anatomy of the hair and skin, health and safety practices and first aid skills.
