DESCRIPTION | The main goals of teaching technical and vocational education in Malta’s secondary schools are to prepare students with the key competences in preparation for the further education and the acquisition of theoretical and practical skills. The teaching of vocational skills within secondary schools requires essential strategies to instill the right attitudes and technological know-how which enables learners to achieve employability levels within society. The unit will prepare teachers preparing to become teachers of vocational subjects the basic scientific knowledge, attitudes and practical skills necessary for the development of vocational competence. The unit will cover effective teaching strategies such as applied critical thinking; problem solving; and simulated learning. Study-Unit Aims: The unit aims to assist learners in order to be able to prepare lessons and activities which focus on the development of cognitive knowledge through applied pedagogies within health and social care. The unit will adopt an interactive approach in order to prepare teachers for the application of health and social practical competent to be delivered within secondary schools. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - know the principles of physically caring for vulnerable service-users within health and social care; - define the core principles of developing effective relationships with vulnerable service users; - explain the Occupational Standards in Care; - describe meal planning for people with different dietary needs. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - conduct various basic applied processes of manual handling of service-users; - prepare meals for people with different dietary needs; - analyze a variety of challenging work-based contexts within health and social care; - conduct various routine processes within the daily schedule of a health and social care setting.
