DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the basic components of applied communication science, and equips students with verbal, written and demonstrative skills for communicating effectively in groups of different sizes and characteristics. It aims to empower the students with intrapersonal and interpersonal communications skills in order to raise self-esteem, confidence, speaking, listening and presentation skills. It outlines criteria for evaluating suitability and effectiveness of presentations and styles of communication as well as appropriate tools.

It focuses on developing knowledge and skills for producing appropriate and well-designed text and visual materials, articles and messages. Thus this is a hands on unit and students will have the opportunity to prepare and write basic, simple material for potential presentations, publications, visuals, PSAs for radio, or talks.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to familiarise students with the different types of communication, particularly as they pertain to the various fields within Home Economics, and to offer students opportunities for practice. It will expose how intrapersonal and interpersonal communication skills work so that they lead to effective communication appropriate to the needs and abilities of the target audience. It will emphasise empathy, active listening and responding skills, as well as self assessment and critical review for increased self-confidence and choice and production of quality messages and communication tools.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the basic components of the communication process;
- Discuss the different types, functions and vehicles of communication through case studies;
- Discuss the various influences on the success of the communication process via critical analysis of different materials.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the skills necessary for communicating with different sectors of society;
- Recognise. through critical analysis, the features of well-written informational/educational text;
- Design, write and produce appropriate informational/educational resources;
- Demonstrate the ability to project one’s voice and speak clearly in different settings to different audiences.
