| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit gives an overview of innovation and textile product development and introduces students to the principles of developing and defining new products. Students will be presented with the principles involved in the ‘design and make’ strategy, especially when applied to textiles and clothing. The unit focuses on the analysis of various situations in which aspects of design are used. Local materials and resources are identified in order to help students realise projects. Students will be guided to apply knowledge of the design principles in a wide range of situations. Guidelines for projects are presented and applied in different contexts. Towards the end of the study-unit, students will present a new product and an extended project related to Textiles where a detailed analysis of the course of action taken will be discussed. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to familiarise students with the basic principles of the 'design process' approach used in product development. It shall assist the students to analyse and evaluate design products activities related to textiles. This study-unit shall also focus on the recognition of social, economic, environmental and health and safety issues pertaining to the field of textiles and clothing. It will also help students develop a new product in textiles and clothing according to a given brief. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the process involved in developing, testing and considering the viability of textile or clothing products which are new to the market in order to ensure growth or survival of an organisation; - Outline the principles involved in the ‘design & make’ process; - Identify local materials/ resources that could be of use in the production of a new textile product and apply this in an extended project; - List and describe various processes involved in the development of a new textile product, also as applied to their own creation; - Apply knowledge of the design principles, properties of materials, use of tools and equipment to various textile production related situations. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically analyse situations where aspects of design are used to satisfy various human needs; - Use investigative procedures during textiles and clothing production stages; - Develop an innovative textile product by following the design brief approach; - Justify and present on a sample of a textile or clothing-related extended project.
