DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on children 0-6 years old. It will first focus on the optimal state of health prior to conception and during pregnancy and lactation. The development of the foetus and the needs of the newborn infant are discussed. This is then followed by the development and care of the pre-school child with emphasis on healthy eating practices and ways of creating a safe and stimulating environment for the holistic development of the child. Parenting skills and the developmental needs of the child - physical, emotional, social and intellectual - will also be discussed. The latter will also include play as an important aspect of children's development according to stage.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study unit aims are:

- To provide students with an in-depth knowledge on young children's developmental stages and needs in order to be able to work with children or to further their studies in this area;
- To highlight the different types of play and their important role in the holistic development of young children,whether in the home or a child care setting;
- To address the various parenting skills required in order to facilitate the holistic development of young children to their maximum potential;
- To complement another unit on Family Studies which focuses on the diverse families in today's society and the needs of the family across the lifestages.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the basic requisites for healthy parenthood planning and growth of a child;
- Discuss the various influences involved in the development of infants;
- Outline the need for healthy eating practices from the early years;
- Outline the need for a safe and stimulating environment for young children;
- Describe requirements for school preparedness;
- Explain the development processes and needs of a child 0-6 years old.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Plan stimulating activities and environments for children 0-6 years old;
- Design and develop safe environments which will be suitable for young children;
- Plan stand-alone and programmes of play activities for children suited to age and developmental stage and ability;
- Solve different scenarios on how to deal with problems and situations related to children of a very young age, with a focus on love, care and promotion of holistic development.
