TITLE Academic Writing and Technology Enhanced Learning for Home Economics Educators

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Health, Physical Education and Consumer Studies

DESCRIPTION The first part of this unit will expose the students to writing skills in terms of organising one’s ideas, structure of writing, putting one’s writing in a sequential order and ways of being succinct. It will also give the students experience in writing at an academic level, writing for a dissertation and other publications, as well as referencing according to particular systems, such as the APA.

The second part of the unit will address the use of technology as a pedagogy for teaching and learning in schools and in different settings and learning environments.

The students will be exposed to the theoretical trends and issues in technology enhanced learning and HE. The students will be able to link constructivist learning approaches to TEL and see how it can be used as an effective pedagogy and learning approach. Strategies for teaching HE through the learning technological sources are discussed and experienced through hands-on sessions. Although specific examples will be addressed and experienced, through hands-on exposure, the students will be taught to assimilate new technologies as they may arise in the future. Examples will be linked to what is available in schools such as eLearning platforms, the interactive whiteboard - (skills and pedagogic potential), digital cameras and smart phones, online learning communities, using the internet as a pedagogic practice, blogs, social media, open source, freeware, tablets, Apps, etc which may be present in schools or which can be appropriate for the HE learning context and related areas.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Explore writing for different contexts but in particular for academic purposes, dissertations and publications;
- Develop an awareness of the benefits of ICT and the new pedagogies in relationship to constructivist learning approaches;
- Form strategies for ways of harnessing ICT with Home Economics (HE) effectively in ways which will enhance the pedagogy and the classroom practice;
- Familiarise themselves with the material available on the web, internet and software for use in HE teaching;
- Plan HE learning activities using ICT as a pedagogic practice and learn how to assimilate technologies which will emerge in the future;
- Produce teaching resources with ICT material in ways which will improve learning;
- Adapt lessons from generic, framework and content-free programmes;
- Use ICT as a means of communicating with parents if necessary.
