DESCRIPTION | The purpose of this unit is to provide undergraduate health professionals with the basic knowledge, tools and strategies needed to practice disease prevention in a broad range of health care environments including, but not limited to, acute care, long-term care and community care. Study-unit Aims Persons preparing for careers in health practice need a solid academic grounding in the principles of communicable disease control before arriving on the job. The study-unit aims to inform how micro-organisms spread and cause disease, evaluate the basics of primary prevention by immunisation and what mass immunisation can accomplish, inform about the importance of routine ongoing communicable disease surveillance and outline the essentials of Travel Medicine. Armed with the essentials, the health care professional will have the tools to approach disease problems in an orderly and rational way. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (1) identify and describe the scope of disease prevention strategies; (2) learn about common infectious diseases and modes of transmission; (3) learn the principles of immunology and immunisations; (4) learn the principles of travel medicine and prevention of travel associated disease; (5) achieve basic knowledge of non-communicable disease and strategies to attain healthy lifestyle. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Integrate his/her current expertise with the basic knowledge, tools and strategies needed to examine problems related to disease prevention and control and develop practical solutions.
