DESCRIPTION The study-unity follows the philosophy behind the UN Convention for the Rights of persons with disability (2006). The general principles of this convention are found in Article 3 which states:

The principles of the present Convention shall be:
(a) Respect for inherent dignity, individual autonomy including the freedom to make one’s own choices, and independence of persons;
(b) Non-discrimination;
(c) Full and effective participation and inclusion in society;
(d) Respect for difference and acceptance of persons with disabilities as part of human diversity and humanity;
(e) Equality of opportunity;
(f) Accessibility;
(g) Equality between men and women;
(h) Respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities and respect for the right of children with disabilities to preserve their identities.

Students will discuss the UNCRPD and work on projects which are related to the different articles of the convention within inclusive contexts.

This study-unit focuses on issues of self-determination and quality of life through discussions on: the protection of the integrity of the person; accessibility; discussions on situations of risk and humanitarian emergencies; Freedom from exploitation, violence and abuse on the place of work and on the Internet; Living independently and being included in the community; Freedom of expression and opinion, and access to information using multiple means of representation; Respect for privacy and the right for home and family life; the right to Work and employment and Participation in political and public life; the right to Participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport in inclusive setting and participation in international cooperation.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at providing students with an understanding of inclusion as an exercise in self-determination and quality of life. Through this unit the students will have a wider understanding of inclusion that goes beyond the classroom.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- List the articles covered by the UN convention on the rights of persons with disability;
- Define self-determination and quality of life;
- Discuss issues around the protection of the integrity of the person;
- List different types of accessibility;
- Identify situations of risk and humanitarian emergencies;
- Explain issues of freedom from exploitation, violence and abuse on the place of work and on the Internet;
- Explain different ways of independent living and inclusion in the community;
- Recognise the need for the Freedom of expression and opinion, and access to information using multiple means of representation;
- Recognise the need for the respect for privacy and the right for home and family life;
- Discuss the right to work and employment and participation in political and public life;
- Establish ways in which the right to participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport in inclusive setting may be reached; and
- Illustrate examples of participation in international cooperation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explore ways how the articles covered by the UN convention on the rights of persons with disability are implemented in our country;
- Analyse and argue about different situations which enhance or hinder self-determination and quality of life;
- Argue about issues around the protection of the integrity of the person;
- Appraise barriers to accessibility and how these may be overcome;
- Examine situations of risk and humanitarian emergencies and how they may be resolved;
- Explore situations of freedom from exploitation, violence and abuse on the place of work and on the Internet offering suggestions on how these may be overcome;
- Compare different ways of independent living and inclusion in the community;
- Defend the need for the Freedom of expression and opinion, and propose access to information using multiple means of representation;
- Defend the need for the respect for privacy and argue about the right for home and family life;
- Defend the right to work and employment while distinguishing between different types of employment;
- Value participation in political and public life by implementing programmes which promote the "Right to My Voice" for persons with disability;
- Investigate ways in which the right to participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport in inclusive setting may be reached; and
- Propose examples for participation in international cooperation.
