DESCRIPTION | This study-unit serves as an introduction to the course of Education for Cultural Mediation. The study-unit offers an ethical and social perspective to the role of the cultural mediator from the perspective of democracy as a way of life. It also serves to instigate a self-reflective process, which is a vital aspect of the role of cultural mediator. An essential aspect of this study-unit is an introduction to the engagement with diversity, the development of an ethical responsibility and a self-understanding as a subject in relation with others. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to familiarise the students with the role of the cultural mediator as follows: - to bring to light the ethical and political dimensions of the role of the mediator within, as well as the social and attitudinal implications such a role calls for; - to engage with the epistemology of diversity, that is, to recognise the diversity of others while at the same time instigate a relational interest; - to assist the students in developing an educational attitude based on the operation of learning to learn. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the role and tasks of the cultural mediator; - Examine the ethical implications of the role within the idea of democracy as a way of life; - Explore and critique one's own attitudes towards diverse cultures and beliefs; - Apply epistemological praxes that are based on the recognition of diversity; - Apply a pedagogical ethos based on the principle of learning to learn. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Distinguish different philosophical understandings of the role of cultural mediator; - Compare different paradigms of cultural, multicultural and intercultural operations; - Critically analyse different colonising trends within multicultural philosophies; - Develop a model of cultural mediation based on ethics of responsibility; - Evaluate the educational component within the cultural mediation operation.
