Study-Unit Description

CODE IAL1028

TITLE An introduction to the Let Me Learn Process

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Inclusion and Access to Learning

DESCRIPTION The study unit will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to become practitioners in the Let Me Learn Process. The pivotal concept behind the Let Me Learn Theory is the understanding that we are unique in the way in which we approach learning tasks and in the way we make sense of the information that is presented to us i.e. the way we learn. The focus is therefore on differentiation by the individual's learning patterns and not by ability.

Lectures will therefore provide opportunities for collaboration and reflection about the way individual learners process and make sense of the information that is presented

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of this study unit are to engage practitioners in a collaborative process of reflection to be able to better understand oneself and others as learners. Through such reflective practice one would be able to better understand the reasons why we teach the way we do and better attend to students' individual learning needs. This unit also aims to help educators to accept diversity and help learners address their learning needs through metacognitive practice. It also aims to equip participants with strategies, tools and techniques that enable learners to become more successful in their learning through the design of learning activities that incorporate the different learning patterns in the classroom. Finally this process will help educators to acquire skills that empower students by providing them with learning strategies which they can use in order to perform better.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

-Define the Let Me Learn theory.
- Describe own interactive learning patterns and use anecdotal evidence from own learning experiences.
- Recall basic concepts of differentiated teaching and attitude towards differentiated classrooms.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

-Prepare student/s for taking the inventory, administer the inventory and do basic validation of scored inventories.
- Apply Let Me Learn knowledge to activity preparation.
- Create appropriate learning materials, which support different learning combinations.
- Apply differentiated learning strategies utilising the Let Me Learn process.
- Explain and implement with the student/s the LML process helping them become aware of their different learning combinations, thus empowering them to take control of their own learning.
- Use an online application which facilitates the process of taking the inventory, compiling a learner's profile and identifying adequate strategies that enhance the teaching and learning process.
