DESCRIPTION This study-unit will present an insight into educating children and youth with intellectual disability, where the learner is positioned at the center. The importance of connection and communication with other key members of the community of care surrounding the learner will also be explored.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to assist the students in gaining a better understanding about intellectual disability and how children and youth with severe intellectual disability can be supported to reach their full potential. It also aims to assist students explore brain development and facilitating the learning process. This study-unit ultimately aims at giving participants strategies to support individuals with Intellectual disability.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define the meaning of intellectual impairment and its impact;
- Consider how learning can best be facilitated in the context of intellectual disability;
- Assert the right to education of children and youth with intellectual disability;
- List factors to consider for learning and strategies to facilitate communication;
- Identify the type of support a child with intellectual impairment needs to participate in the school community; Develop an ethics of care;
- Implement a programme towards autonomy;
- Appreciate the importance of the caregiver and other key persons in the learning life of the child or youth with intellectual disability.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply their understanding of intellectual disability to enhance the student’s development in the school community;
- Facilitate learning for children and youth with intellectual disability;
- Draw up individual learning programmes together with a class teacher to ensure the participation of all students in class, that integrate different skills and activities;
- Change or adapt these programmes to meet the specific needs of mixed groups of children and those in different stages of learning;
- Plan daily programmes with structure and routine;
- Implement a programme towards autonomy;
- Implement adaptations needed to ensure student access to the curriculum in preschool and in the primary and secondary schools;
- Critically evaluate a learning programme;
- Engage children and youth in individual and group learning;
- Explore ways of giving agency to children and youth with sever intellectual disability - Support student participation outside class with relevant pre-tasks or adaptations;
- Empower caregivers.
