DESCRIPTION Parental school involvement plays a significant role in students’ social, emotional and academic outcomes.
While virtually all schools promote parent involvement, there are different types of involvement, ranging from encouraging volunteering to providing parents with home-based learning activities.

This study-unit centers around on what research tells us about the participation and effects that parents, families and careers have in the education of children under their care.

In this unit parents as well as teachers will be invited to share their experiences with the students.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit will provide participants with a general overview of the concept of parental involvement in education and with different possibilities for genuine parental participation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify different models of parental involvement;
- Illustrate ways of fostering genuine parental involvement;
- Illustrate listening/communication skills in order to facilitate parental involvement;
- Analyse the myths and prejudices that interfere with productive parent-teacher-school relationships;
- Compare local and international research on parental involvement;
- Examine the rights and responsibilities of parents within the local legal. framework, including case-studies of real-life situations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Calibrate and collate ideas on how to reach out and deal with difficult parents;
- Implement strategies for fostering genuine parental involvement;
- Implement listening/communication skills in order to facilitate parental involvement;
- Plan parental involvement and school-based community development;
- Investigate local and international research on parental involvement;
- Identify the support parents of children with SEN;
- Implement communication with a range of parents.
