DESCRIPTION | This study-unit offers the necessary algebraic foundations needed for mathematical computations and manipulations. The range of techniques developed in this study-unit are aimed to equip the students with the necessary tools to be in a better position to undertake further study-units in Mathematics and in other related subjects. Study-Unit Aims: - A review of the mathematical techniques and topics covered at a lower level and the consolidation of this knowledge; - An outline of the applications of algebra (algebraic representation, indices, equations, inequalities and formulae); - An overview of the use of Cartesian coordinates in two dimensions (linear, quadratic, cubic and reciprocal functions; - An outline of sequences. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Find solutions to equations and inequalities graphically by shading appropriate regions; - State and use the laws of indices; - Recognise and use sequences. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Manipulate algebraic expressions; - Expanding and factorising expressions; - Solve equations and inequalities graphically and algebraically; - Sketch curves and solve graphically linear, quadratic, cubic and reciprocal functions; - Generate sequences and make use of the n th term. |
