TITLE Number and Data Handling

UM LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

MQF LEVEL 3

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Science

DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers foundations in number work, ratio and percentages, probability and statistics. The range of techniques developed in this study-unit are aimed to equip the students with the necessary tools to be in a better position to undertake further study-units in Mathematics and in other related subjects.

Study-Unit Aims:

To provide:
- A review of the mathematical techniques and topics covered at a lower level and the consolidation of this knowledge;
- Use of Integers, Fractions, Decimal Numbers and Indices in various operations;
- An overview of probability of single and combined events;
- An introduction to statistics;
- Use of percentages and ratios in practical situations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the precedence of mathematical operations;
- Describe limits of accuracy;
- Interpret data from column/bar charts;
- Use and construct several statistical diagrams;
- Understand and use ratios and percentages in real life contexts.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use of BIDMAS during calculations with integers, decimal and fractions;
- Make estimates and sensible approximations;
- Calculate probability for combined events;
- Analyze data from several statistical techniques.
