DESCRIPTION | The study-unit aims to further the study of modern and contemporary history through thematic events which will allow the learner to extend the range of tools acquired the Introduction to the Study of History 1 to analyse and critique more complex social and political phenomena related to the study of history. Study-Unit Aims: The aims are to provide the learners with the methodological tools to engage with and critique the history of the following themes: - Colonisation and decolonisation, - Social movements, - The holocaust, - Gender, - Political movements, - Violence, and - Globalisation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify change and continuity, - recognise comparative methods employed by historians to construct knowledge of different thematic histories, - understand the difference between microhistory and macrohistory, - understand how different theoretical frameworks offer prisms through which to view the past. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - engage in class discussions and give presentations, - elaborate theoretical frameworks to write short assignments on historical sources, - use bibliographic sources appropriately and effectively, - engage in the methods of writing history in class discussions and assignments, - identify the bias of the learners and their theoretical assumptions.
