DESCRIPTION In this study-unit learners will further their engagement with more complex concepts in philosophy, political science and critical theory in the context of modern and contemporary issues.

Study-Unit Aims:

To present more complex themes and concepts related to the Humanities and Social sciences in order to enable learners to engage at a more advanced level with these disciplines.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the denotation and connotation of complex terminology and the different contexts in which they appear.
- compare the methodologies and theoretical paradigms of different disciplines.
- infer and clearly identify the overlap between disciplines.
- use knowledge gained to form personal understandings of the areas covered in the study-unit.
- demonstrate understanding of the functions and dynamics of political institutions and processes of a state.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- outline personal biases that may affect personal judgements.
- construct written and spoken arguments concerning the major introductory themes through written work and presentations.
- develop a critique of dominant ideologies and discourse.
- analyse regimes of truth and how they contribute to the construction of knowledge.
- integrate awareness of the themes of inclusion in society.
- outline the intersections of ethnicity, race, class, age, and gender, and how they relate to our construction of knowledge and regimes of truth.
