TITLE Fundamentals of Physics

UM LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

MQF LEVEL 3

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT International School for Foundation Studies

DESCRIPTION This study-unit conveys introductory Physics concepts. It touches upon all the main areas of Physics, delivering only the fundamental concepts with the help of practical examples and simple experimental demonstrations. The topics delivered are listed below:

1. Introduction to Motion;
2. Introduction to Forces;
3. Nature of Waves;
4. Introduction to Heat Transfer;
5. Introduction to Electric Fields;
6. Introduction to Magnetism;
7. Radiation and its Applications;
8. The Universe.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to consolidate the fundamental principles of Physics to students that aspire to take Physics subjects at a higher level in the Science, Engineering and ICT foundation programme. Successful completion of IFS0418 ensures that the candidate has the adequate base knowledge required to comprehend the concepts delivered at higher-level physics subjects offered at foundation level.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Tackle introductory questions on linear motion;
- Discuss the concept of acceleration in relation to the forces acting on the body;
- Draw simple free-body diagrams;
- Understand the importance of sign conventions;
- Explain the difference between transverse and longitudinal waves and link them to different waves occurring in nature;
- Distinguish between conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer;
- Express the concept of electrical current and electrical potential;
- Use Ohm's law and identify between conductors and insulators;
- Analyse simple direct current circuits;
- Understand forces induced on conductors due to interaction of magnetic fields;
- Comprehend the concept of induced EMF and induced current;
- Explain simple concepts on radiation and their uses;
- Evaluate the half-life of a radioactive substance;
- Describe the concept of background radiation;
- Express the role of gravity on Earth and in space;
- Describe fundamental concepts about our solar system;
- Understand the concept of light years;
- Explain the observation of the expanding universe.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse practical systems with a scientific approach;
- Identify the application of the fundamental laws of physics in practical systems;
- Describe the fundamental theoretical laws and link them to concepts behind several practical solutions;
- Set up simple experiments to demonstrate fundamental physics concepts.
