DESCRIPTION IFS0423 will help students wishing to join the foundation programme to engage with a variety of text types in English and to complete a variety of academic task types that will allow them to demonstrate comprehension and critical approaches to reading at this level

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to introduce a variety of academic text types to students with no-to-little prior experience of engaging with the reading requirmements in an academic context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Distinguish between a variety of text types, including journal articles, newspaper articles, text book excerpts, online encyclopaedias, websites of commercial, governmental and non-governmental organisations;
- Find texts online that are relevant to a research topic;
- Evaluate texts for relevance and academic reliability;
- Generate research questions on the content of a text before reading.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Take notes from a text on points relevant to a specific topic;
- Report information from a text in student’s own words;
- Answer comprehension questions about text content;
- Summarise key points from a text;
- Write a reference list and in-text citations in Harvard format.
