DESCRIPTION | IFS0424 will help students wishing to join the foundation programme to engage with a variety of written texts in English and to complete a variety of academic task types that will allow them to demonstrate their ability to produce appropriately and effectively written texts at this level. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to introduce a variety of academic writing tasks to students with no-to-little prior experience of engaging with the writing requirmements in an academic context. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify the basics of structuring clauses (including punctuation), sentences, paragraphs and complete texts; - recognise thesis Statements and Topic Sentences; - outline different text type conventions will be introduced up to an upper intermediate level mainly including: summaries, paraphrasing skills, definitions, introductions and conclusions as well as first tier essays (up to 500 words); - distinguish between referencing for the respective fields of study will also be introduced at this level. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Construct different types of sentences to befit the purpose of their writing; - Present effective thesis statements and topic sentences at an upper intermediate level; - Plan and write essays up to 500 words focusing on structure and language use; - Complement their writing with the use of a range of vocabulary that is more academically inclined.
