DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to enable students to learn the basic skills for developing an understanding of culture, cultural heritage, cultural and national identities, and how these notions are entangled with the discipline of tourism in the academic and real-world context of the museums, the sites, and the industry. Students will also learn the basic mechanics of how to study niche and other types of tourism. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to: - sensitise the student towards both tangible and intangible heritage. - familiarise students with ideas of culture, heritage, authenticity, and identity. - raise awareness of the relationship between culture and heritage. - helps students become aware of existing politics of cultural management. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the difference between different forms of heritage. - Explain the pre-historical and historical context in which identities and cultures are produced. - Identify and write about different material cultures and sites. - Discuss the importance of sustainability of heritage and of industry. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Distinguish between different types of heritage. - Discuss different approaches to the study of heritage, culture, and identity. - Apply the knowledge gained in relation to professional and industrial norms. - Critically analyse issues of sustainability with regards to heritage and its management.
