TITLE Introduction to First Aid

DESCRIPTION Students registered on this study-unit will learn the basic knowledge and principles of First Aid, namely:
1. General Principles of First Aid
2. Bleeding including types of wounds
3. Basic physiology of shock, types of shock and first aid measures for shock
4. Unconsciousness - causes, signs and symptoms and first aid measures for
5. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in: babies, children and adults
6. First Aid for burns and scalds including chemical burns, including the eyes
7. First Aid for Heat Exhaustion and heat stroke
8. First Aid measures for poisoning
9. First Aid for head injury
10. Bandaging
11. First Aid for multiple injuries

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide students with knowledge on general first aid.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Give a definition of: First Aid, First Aider, Characteristics and qualities of a good First Aider;
- Have knowledge on safe first aid practice.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify conditions - illnesses or injuries which require First Aid measures;
- Set First Aid priorities;
- List/describe the signs and symptoms of different conditions needing First Aid measures;
- Describe different First Aid measures to be taken for casualties with different illnesses and/or injuries.
