Study-Unit Description

CODE IME4202

TITLE Industrial Process and Quality Management

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives an introduction to quality management of industrial processes. The study-unit provides a short history of quality and how the subject developed from the industrial revolution to modern manufacturing systems. An emphasis is also made on the people/gurus behind this subject. A differentiation is made between inspection for quality control and assessment and the modern view of getting things 'right the first time' in all the aspects of product development.

Quality Management Systems – ISO 9000 and QS 9000 series, Environmental - ISO 14000, and Health and Safety Management Systems are explained in detail.
Quality costing - appraisal, preventive and failure costs - and the 'Cost of Quality' method are explained and demonstrated. Several Problem Solving techniques, such as the 'Old Quality Tools' and the 'New Quality Tools', including PDCA cycle, benchmarking, brainstorming, Cause and Effect diagrams, Pareto analysis, TOPS etc are discussed and demonstrated in class.

Study-unit Aims:

Appreciate the Importance of Quality in an Organization
Understand the basic concepts and approaches to Quality Management and Process Control
Recognize the need to use a structured and disciplined approach to engineering problem solving

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Explain with some practical day to day examples of the importance of quality to a an organization;
Define in terms of practical usage the meaning of good quality;
Quantify in terms of percentages the quality costs (Prevention, Inspection, Failure costs) that should be balanced within a company;
Demonstrate the use of both Old and New quality tools in engineering problem solving;
Describe the differences between Quality, Environmental, Operational Health and Management Systems;
Report and explain the clauses of the Quality Management System - ISO 9000.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Carry out a Cost of Quality exercise;
Use the '7 Old Quality Tools' - Pareto Analysis, Flow Charts, Control Charts, Histograms, Run Charts, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Check Sheets;
Use the '7 New Quality Tools' - Affinity Diagram, Interrelationship Digraph, Tree Diagram, Matrix Diagram, Matrix Data Analysis, PDPC, Arrow Diagram.
