DESCRIPTION | The great focus on developing creative and critical thinking skills that is growing across the world indicates a broadly shared view that creativity and innovation are crucial to success within the emerging global knowledge community. This study-unit offers a variety of perspectives on the application of idea generation and creativity while imparting key theoretical components related to creativity and critical thinking. It also introduces students to the understanding and application of critical thinking skills, both when approaching their own work as well as that of others. Indicative Content: - An introduction to creativity and creative thinking; - The importance of perception; - The application of a wide-ranging collection of thinking tools; - Critical Thinking. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with an understanding of the implications of creativity and critical thinking and their applications. Interactive workshops will enable students to apply tools of creative and critical thinking. During the workshops which form an integral part of this study unit, emphasis is placed on the variety of uses for these methodologies and on the practical application of the tools learnt. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Define creativity and explain key conceptual elements surrounding the term; - Discuss the importance of creativity and the manner in which theorists claim that it can be generated and studied; - Describe the role that perception plays in the process of thinking and of creativity; - Explain the importance of critical thinking skills when approaching their own work and that of others; - Demonstrate the relevance of skill acquisition (in addition to knowledge and understanding) where such methodologies are concerned. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply tools and methods which will enable them to generate new ideas and broaden their perception; - Select appropriate creativity tools and methods in view of the variety of situations to which they may be applied; - Apply critical thinking skills to their own work and to that of others.
