DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to humanitarian action approaches in regional contexts, gives them the opportunity to cooperate, function and work in a different cultural setting, and help students to develop and adapt their research project to the regional context in preparation for the students’ project in the fourth semester. Regional training is offered at the following partner universities: - Eastern Europe: Uniwersytet Warszawski (Poland) - Post-Soviet States: Vilniaus universitetas (Lithuania) - Caucasus region: Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Georgia) - Middle East: German-Jordanian University (Jordan) - Middle East: Université Saint-Joseph (Lebanon) [in French] - Sub-Saharan Africa: Université d'Abomey Calavi (Benin) [in French] - Southern Africa: University of Western Cape (South Africa) - South Asia: Tata Institute of Social Sciences (India) - Mainland Southeast Asia: Chiang Mai University (Thailand) - Mainland Southeast Asia: University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam) - Maritime Southeast Asia: Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) - Maritime Southeast Asia: International Islamic University (Malaysia) - East Asia: International Christian University (Japan) - Asia & Pacific: Deakin University (Australia) - Latin America: Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia) - North America: Fordham University (USA) - North America: Boston College School of Social Work (USA) Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - Provide students with the analytical tools to apply and develop an understanding of the contextual framework of humanitarian action at the level of a specific region and country, including humanitarian actors’, both governmental and non-governmental perspectives and policies. - Develop for students a good understanding of the key humanitarian action issues in the specific region of their choice, with special attention given to how policies are translated into action and programmes on the ground. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Comprehend the key humanitarian action issues in a certain region with an interdisciplinary understanding on how policies are translated into action and programmes in the political, legal, anthropological, public health and management context of the region. - Conceptualise the needs and rights of crisis-affected people in a certain regional context necessary to start dealing with professional work situations. - Express a critical and interdisciplinary understanding of the possible impact of humanitarian action with respect to the interests of different actors in a certain regional context. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Interpret and critically analyse data, information and experience concerning a certain regional humanitarian crisis and intervention in order to develop a contextual understanding of the geographical workfield, the community, perspectives, policies, issues and possible solutions. - Demonstrate the ability to select and apply relevant solutions for effective response in complex and ill-defined humanitarian situations in accordance with the needs and capabilities of crisis-affected people in a certain regional context. - Demonstrate the development of an open learning attitude to the specific characteristics of an unfamiliar regional humanitarian context. - Identify opportunities to overcome humanitarian dilemmas in complex and unpredictable humanitarian situations in a regional context. |
