DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of a group project on a humanitarian aspect prevalent in the regional context chosen by each student. Such a group project will include culturally diverse teams, with NOHA students working with other students from the host university.

Depending on local possibilities and appropriateness, group projects will be set up around a local community (working with communities) with a humanitarian related assignment. Important aspects would include local security training, the interaction with local communities, accountability and communicative skills and team building. Additionally, it would be complemented by peer-to-peer training, simulations, and cross-cultural and anthropological exercises.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- Offer the students an enrichment of the cross-cultural experience by giving them the opportunity to work, function and cooperate in a different cultural setting.
- Contribute to a valuable aspect of the students' professional careers, making them more versatile and effective with regard to interacting with local communities and operating in international, multi-cultural teams in a humanitarian-related context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Critically understand the application of humanitarian principles and standards in a certain regional humanitarian context.
- Critically understand local security rules and the interests of actors present in a certain regional context.
- Enjoy comprehensive knowledge of the diversity of actors and stakeholders in a certain region and a thorough understanding of their social-cultural backgrounds, conflicting interests and corresponding interaction.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to apply the humanitarian principles and values in practical, innovative terms to policies, strategies and programme management in a certain regional context.
- Demonstrate skills to anticipate security concerns and personal, organisational and community risks for a certain regional context and determine the best and safest response to humanitarian needs.
- Demonstrate the ability to manage a humanitarian related group project in a certain regional operative context and train peers or other persons toward the successful implementation of a humanitarian assignment.
- Demonstrate the anthropological tools to understand and analyse socio-cultural diversity and issues of beneficiaries and stakeholders in a local humanitarian setting in order to develop adequate and effective behaviour in a certain regional context.
- Demonstrate communicative skills to listen and convey own ideas in a structured, intelligible way while adapting the means and the message to the characteristics of beneficiaries and stakeholders in a multi-cultural humanitarian setting.
