DESCRIPTION | Students will undergo lectures under four headings. Under the Personal Career Development Training, students will cover the subjects of application writing, Presentation Techniques, Professional Networking, Negotiation and Time Management. The Professional Leadership segment of the study-unit will expose students to Human Resources Management, Leadership Skills, Team Management, Working in Emergencies, Organisational Development, Change Management, Quality Management & Evaluation and Monitoring. The third segment, Working in Emergencies, will have the students deal with aspects of the humanitarian work-field, including sectors and clusters, the Code of Conduct for People in Aid, Humanitarian Ethics, International Law, Inter-cultural Awareness and Gender Mainstreaming. And the forth and final segment of the Study-unit will consist of an elective short language course or a course on specific skills required for placement. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to further prepare students for working in the field of Humanitarian Action by providing comprehensive, supplementary insight into the practical aspects of humanitarian work, humanitarian organisations, management, ethics and more. This study-unit is meant to supplement IRL5041 in order to provide students with the theoretical knowledge they would need to reap the full rewards of their work placement, which would follow this study-unit. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Prove a familiarity with the Humanitarian Action work-field in general and in terms of access to the labour market in particular. - Display a correct awareness of the organisational context with regard to humanitarian employment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the ability to present oneself on the Humanitarian Action labour market. - Determine one's own ambition in relation to the HA work-field. - Self-reflect and assess personal strengths and weaknesses. - Identify personal learning goals and identify contributions to these goals. |
