DESCRIPTION This study unit introduces students wishing to carry out research in the area of sustainable development, to the principles of sustainability. The three aspects of sustainable development, society, environment and economics will be covered and students will be able and required to absorb these principles and apply them in their research.

Study-unit Aims

The study unit aims to provide students with a background into the historical development of sustainable development and the three principles of sustainability and their interactions. It aims to provide the students with perspective of sustainable development in economic, social and environmental terms.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- list the stages of development of the concept of sustainability
- demonstrate how the principles of sustainability can be applied in various fields
- explain the importance of sustainability

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- report on matters related to sustainability through an examination at the end of the study unit
- compare practices from a sustainability point of view
- analyse indicators of sustainability (some numerical skills)
