DESCRIPTION The study-unit explores the foundations of investment choices, investors' behaviour and underlying theoretical models of investment returns, and risk returns interactions in broadly defined equity, alternative investments and fixed income investment markets. The foregoing is integrated within the examination of the investment decision making challenges which face investors, both institutional and individual, in the current global investment landscape. The study-unit hence assesses the practical challenges of these entities as they pertain to investment management, portfolio execution, financial and long term estate planning.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:

- provide a rigorous, in-depth overview of investment choices, investors' behaviour and underlying theoretical models of investment returns, and risk returns interactions in broadly defined equity, alternative investments and fixed income investment markets.
- equip students with the theoretical and practical tools required to tackle problems in the areas of portfolio management, portfolio planning and construction, risk and return and equity security analysis and valuation.
- provide a clear understanding of the investment decision making challenges which face investors, both institutional and individual, in the current global investment landscape. This will include investment management, portfolio execution, financial and long term estate planning.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify, critically evaluate and synthesise in substantive theories, frameworks and models, both quantitative and qualitative, which are used in the investment/portfolio and wealth management;
- Describe and understand the key parts of the portfolio and wealth management process, from individual investment planning to institutional investment planning;
- Design and evaluate strategies for managing institutional and high net worth individual wealth;
- Evaluate and recommend the most suited portfolio and wealth management strategy for a range of potential scenarios;
- Discuss the risks in implementation and execution of wealth management strategies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyze the merits or otherwise of specific financial investments and investment portfolios generally.
- judge financial investment opportunities and risks.
- apply the mechanics of professional money management to portfolio management, portfolio construction, risk and return as well as to equity security analysis and valuation.
- integrate Insurance-related products within the portfolio management process.
