DESCRIPTION | The themes to be covered include: - Contemporary international environmental issues - Overview of the major developments in international environmental law, with special reference to EU law - Basic environmental law principles and approaches - Soft law, hard law and compliance - The concept of sustainable development in international law - Environmental treaties under international and national law - Environmental Diplomacy and Multilateral negotiations The themes above will be applied to the realties of islands and small states. Study-Unit Aims: This aim of this study-unit is to provide students with an advanced understanding of environmental law and diplomacy and other environmental agreements between states. Special reference will be made to instruments of interest to small island states. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Improve his/her knowledge of environmental law principles and approaches relating to contemporary international environmental issues, with special reference to EU law; - Distinguish between soft law, hard law and compliance; - Become familiar with environmental treaties under international and national law; - Appreciate the benefits if environmental diplomacy in multilateral negotiations, with specific reference to islands and small states. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply the concept of sustainable development in international law; - Analyse the different diplomatic approaches for negotiating international agreements; - Critically appraise issues involved in international negotiations, with specific reference to small states.
