DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers the following themes:

- An overview of the political and social situation the EU small members states and the small candidate countries;
- An overview of the economies of the EU small members states and the small candidate countries;
- The institutions of the EU;
- The role and influence of small states in the EU decision making;
- Legal instruments governing these EU funding and associated policies;
- EU policies of relevance to small EU members states with a focus on the small island states of Malta and Cyprus;
- EU funds of relevance to small EU members states with a focus on small island states of Malta and Cyprus.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main objective of the study-unit is to equip students with the knowledge and skills that would help them understand the EU Institutions, policies and policy-making of relevance to the small EU member states. The students would be given a sound grounding in the role and influence of small stats in the EU decision-making. The study-unit will also provide students with the necessary knowledge of the main funding avenues to help small states achieve their aims, and the legal instruments governing these funds and associated policies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the policy-making of the EU;
- Comprehend the legal basis of the EU Acquis;
- Assess the impact of these policies on the EU small member states and the small candidate countries;
- Comprehend the economic, political and social challenges faced by small states in the EU;
- Explore the role and influence of small states in the EU decision making process.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Be better equipped to undertake in depth analysis of the economic. political and social realities of the small EU member states;
- Identify appropriate policies with a small state perspective;
- Apply knowledge relating to the small EU member states to seek EU funding opportunities.
