DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an introduction to Italian language and Italian civilization. It is designed for students who have never learned Italian or whose knowledge is limited to just a few words. It combines basic grammar, vocabulary and communication skills studied in real life situations.

Study-unit Aims:

- To enable students to read and create short texts;
- To allow students to participate in short conversations on topics of everyday life;
- To assist students in understanding the meaning of simple texts;
- To create an awareness of the essential grammatical aspects of Italian.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognize and use familiar words and simple phrases for concrete purposes;
- understand simple instructions and interactions;
- communicate in a basic way and be ready to repeat or reformulate to communicate.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- make use of a basic Italian vocabulary and simple language structures;
- express themselves in everyday situations (greeting people, talking about habits, expressing feelings and opinions, asking and giving information, talking about past events).

A course pack with a selection of theoretical and critical readings will be made available.
