The first part of the study-unit will study a series of key films of Neorealism such as “Ossessione,” “Roma città aperta”, “Ladri di biciclette”, and “ Sciuscià.” Special attention will be dedicated to the way in which “Senso”, “La strada”, and “Le notti bianche”, among others, distance themselves from the basic tenets of neorealism. The second part of the study-unit will be dedicated to the discussion of the “Commedia all’italiana”, with a particular focus on the films by Mario Monicelli and Pietro Germi, among others.
