DESCRIPTION | During the first part of the study-unit the main instruments to study poetry and prose will be presented, introducing notions of narratology (fabula and plot, focalization, the point of view, the author and the narrator), the figures of speech and notions of stylistics and metrics. The unit will study the main genres of Italian literature within a historical and theoretical perspective. The second part of this study-unit will be focused on the concept of interpretation. We will reflect on the social influence of literature, on the role of linguistics and philology and finally on different theories of interpretation. This part of the unit will mainly be based on the examples provided by the most important Italian literary critics, among whom De Sanctis, Contini, Debenedetti, Fortini and Timpanaro. This study-unit will bring together theory and analysis: every week we will use Italian literary text (both poetry and prose) in order to give students useful examples thanks to which we will apply all the critical tools presented in class. Study-unit Aims: - To give students a satisfactory presentation of the main instruments of literary analysis. - To introduce students to different theories of textual interpretation, trying to give them an overview of the principal methods of reading literature. - To show students the importance of style for the composition of an essay: this will be a first step that will help them in the composition of their final dissertation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply a wide range of theoretical and critical approaches to the study of literature. - Use the principal tools offered by rhetoric, liguistics, philology and stylistics in order to read, comprehend and interpret a literary text. - Have a wide overview of the main Italian scholars and critics that will constitute a constant example to imitate. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Read and discuss complex literary text thanks to the use of the analysis instruments they have studied. - Demonstrate critical abilities in the analysis of a wide range of literary texts. - Apply their knowledge and their competences also to other language and literatures rather than the Italian, in order to establish a dialogue with other students and experts of the European literary canon. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Required readings: - Beltrami, P. 2002 La metrica italiana, il Mulino, Bologna. - Vittorini, F. (1998) Fabula e intreccio, La nuova Italia, Firenze - Mortara-Garavelli, B. (2003), Manuale di retorica, Bompiani, Milano.
