DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will be divided into two distinct parts. The first part will be dedicated to the development of the Italian lyric tradition via a series of close readings of a number of poems from the Novecento. The primary texts may include works by Umberto Saba, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Eugenio Montale, Sandro Penna, and Giovanni Giudici, among others. Along with issues of periodization, special attention will be given to poetic forms, figures of speech, rhythm, metre and the rapport between sound and meaning. In the second part of the study-unit, we will examine a range of examples of Italian fiction with a particular focus on a series of interrelated topics in postmodern narrative: literary self-consciousness, space and temporality, narrative technique, intertextuality, citationality, authorial intention and the relationship between literary representation and veracity. We will also be discussing the films based on some of the novels which will be treated. The intent of this part of the study-unit dedicated to Italian fiction is thus to combine twentieth-century written narrative and cinema in a critical and compelling fashion. The works of fiction may include Luigi Pirandello’s Il fu Mattia Pascal, Italo Calvino’s Se una notte d’inverno un viaggiatore, Antonio Tabucchi’s Sostiene Pereira (novel and film), Giorgio Manganelli’s Centuria, and Francesco Marroni’s Nelle vene del tempo.
