DESCRIPTION | This is an introductory unit that uncovers the Knights' profound impact on Maltese culture through exquisite paintings, sculptures, churches, artefacts, and architecture. Students will dive into the awe-inspiring St. John's Co-Cathedral and Caravaggio's masterpieces, amongst many others, and learn the symbolism behind the art and the significance of artistic works and church artefacts. Learners will engage in interactive sessions and discussions, deepening their understanding of this enthralling historical legacy. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify key artistic elements within the Knights of St John's cultural legacy. - Analyze the symbolism embedded in paintings, sculptures, churches, artefacts, and architecture. - Recognize the historical context that influenced the creation of specific artistic works and church artefacts. - Evaluate the impact of Caravaggio's masterpieces on the artistic landscape of Malta. - Differentiate between various artistic styles and techniques employed during the Knights' era. - Demonstrate an ability to interpret the significance of artistic expressions within the context of the Knights of St John's influence on Maltese culture. - Apply critical thinking skills to engage in discussions and interactive sessions centered around the art and artefacts associated with the Knights of St John. - Relate specific artistic works to broader historical and cultural narratives, highlighting their relevance and importance. - Illustrate connections between the visual arts and the religious practices of the Knights of St John. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyze artworks and artifacts critically, identifying stylistic elements, iconography, and artistic techniques to extract historical and cultural meanings. - Establish connections between artistic creations and broader historical, cultural, and religious contexts, enriching the understanding of the Knights' impact. - Approach the art and artifacts with cultural sensitivity, understanding and respecting the religious and historical significance attached to them.
