TITLE Long Essay

DESCRIPTION The long essay should be done under the supervision of an academic member of the Faculty of Laws' staff. It must be approximately 10,000 words long and should consist of original research at under graduate level. The title of the long essay is to be selected by the candidate and approved by the Faculty Board.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to come up with an original piece of writing which is of academic value and analysis a provision of the law or a legal principle. It should aim to contribute to the progressive development of the thinking in the subject area concerned. Ideally it should contribute to possible legislative reform or a revision of applicable legal practices and/or procedures. It also aims to develop skills in drawing up a literature review and a methodology section.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) master the subject matter upon which s/he has written his/her long essay;
(b) make concrete proposals for law reform;
(c) theorize on the subject matter of his/her long essay.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) write a well conceptualized, researched, methodological coherent and rationally robust piece of work;
(b) apply theoretical knowledge to practice;
(c) master research methods.
