DESCRIPTION | Restorative Justice is a new approach to criminal justice. This unit will give an overview of the theories that have inspired the restorative justice movement, exploring key issues of the concepts and principles of restorative justice, train students in restorative justice mediation and critically examine the rationale of such a method. Furthermore the legal structure underpinning restorative justice and how this new approach can fit in the more traditional criminal justice scenario will be explored. The students will also be made aware of the problems that such approach has and the key tensions that exist in the restorative justice movement. Study-unit Aims To make students aware of restorative justice principles; To familiarise students with the laws governing restorative justice. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Describe the restorative justice process; Assess when victim-offender mediation is appropriate; Have an understanding of the Maltese law governing restorative justice principles. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Conduct victim-offender mediation sessions; Work with other criminal justice personnel.
